The Baku is a mythological creature said to devour nightmares, If a child wakes up from a bad dream and calls his name three times it is said that he will appear and devour the dream allowing them to return to a peaceful sleep!
 
It's still common to see a Baku talisman beside the bedside of Japanese children to this day.
